DCN statement on File on 4 programme on Northern Cyprus

31st March 2026

On 31st March 2026, BBC’s File on 4 explored issues relating to donor conception fertility treatment in Northern Cyprus in a programme titled Sunshine and Secrets. Donor Conception Network was asked to contribute to the programme, to comment on what the investigation had uncovered and what impact the discoveries might have on the families affected.

Sunshine and Secrets: The hidden side of IVF

What happens when the sperm or egg donor you choose isn’t the one you get? Northern Cyprus is a sun-soaked haven for affordable IVF. But behind the glossy clinic websites, parents are discovering their chosen sperm or egg donors might not have been used. For File on 4 Investigates Anna Collinson follows parents searching for answers and children wondering where they have come from.

We’re aware that programmes like this can leave parents feeling anxious about their own situations, worrying that a similar scenario may affect them and their children. It may have been particularly distressing for anyone who has had treatment in Northern Cyprus.

If you have been affected by the programme, please do contact us. We offer a confidential supportive service for parents or prospective parents who may be wanting to talk through their personal situations and concerns. We can also signpost to professional counsellors where appropriate.

It might be helpful to remember that, ultimately, all donor conception treatment, whatever the country or clinic, has a component of uncertainty for parents and children and any family could end up navigating unexpected discoveries. That’s not to say that where clinics or donors have lied or committed fraud that the situation isn’t made more complex and challenging. Where that’s the case, it’s essential for the truth to be uncovered and those misdemeanors dealt with. In our experience, and as the families in the programme demonstrate, families can find ways to manage new information, however challenging, and remain resilient and secure.

The fertility landscape can be confusing and prospective parents are often juggling competing requirements, including decisions around finances, donor matching and donor availability.  We understand how difficult it can be in that context for people who are making complex decisions about where to have treatment. We would encourage anyone considering treatment to seek reliable information and specialist counselling where possible to be sure they’ve had the time and space to think through their options and the longer term implications of any decisions. And, of course, come to DC Network for support and connection. Our members have had treatment all over the world, including Northern Cyprus.
