A fascinating post from last year from reproductive science journalist, Alison Motluk, who – over the summer months – gives people access to past posts which are usually behind a paywall. This one is a rare perspective from an independent sperm donor (sometimes referred to as ‘informal’ donors as they tend to connect with recipients online, outside the clinic system). It’s an illuminating and insightful read, particularly in terms of his reticence about being completely open about it and in turn, how others (including colleagues, girlfriends, family members) have responded once told. Recently, his son mentioned that he might like to become an independent sperm donor like his dad, which he’s encouraging him to think very carefully about on the basis of his personal, quite difficult, experience.
